Brunswick Courtyard House

This project is about love, faith and consistency. I was given the pleasure of working once again with one of my first clients in Melbourne - a client who placed much faith in a young architect in his first year of practice. The result was Five Courtyards House; modestly sized for a young couple and their newborns, designed in 2010, and built in 2012 and on a very tight budget.

Here, seamlessly and as if continuing a story left unfinished, together we imagined, designed and crafted a more spacious yet still modest house to suit the family’s current needs and more adequately provide for balance into the future.

The design response is simple, present a very small volume, harmonious proportion and simple expression to the street, then expand and open the volumes towards the rear, capturing views, breezes and sunlight. Privacy was important to my client. Spaces for vibrant family activity or quiet relaxation abound.

The materials speak the language of place, raw recycled bricks, warm timbers, galvanised steel roofs and neat courtyard gardens lushly planted.

No nonsense, all joy.
